Kahvi #294: Frederik Behr / Glass Marble

'An interesting release arrives at #294 from guest artist 'Frederik Behr'. Glass Marble is interesting in the way that there is several different styles apparent throughout the 39 minutes playing time, but instead of different styles in different tracks, different styles are combined.

Starting off with a subtle (but seriously addictive) piano melody in the 'Alleyways' which you'll find yourself remembering for days and kicking it into the electronic age with a powerful bassline, the scene is set for the rest of the ep.

Ambient warmth appears in 'Wooden Marble' which leads onto an even more curious track 'Heart Valve' - if imitation is a sincere form of flattery then this is probably the closest I've ever heard of a tribute to 'Bad Loop' by another artist. If you're familiar with the artist that created Kahvi classic 'Lumme' you'll recognise this style immediately.

Tracks of choice in this ep: all, but 80's crush (track 5) has one of the meatiest basslines I've heard in a long while. Definately one for the high volume!'

Kahvi #293: Drafts on a theme / Rush EP

'Time to show the skills of a new artist this time around on Kahvi. Drafts on a theme is one of the few UK artists that appear on Kahvi.

With his own mix of 'lounge vs electronic' work, his style is one of the familiar - yet, there are elements brought into the tracks that make them fresh and sparkling.

We've got the good, solid beats of 'don't be so picky' to the more surreal '74', and then the sublime Cloudnine airship which definately has some element of Boards of Canada in there somewhere.

An interesting, thoughtful and definately listenable premier for Drafts on a theme. Enjoy!'

Kahvi #292: Weldroid / Attitude Indicator

'Weldroid is a Kahvi regular almost now - after appearing as guest artist in Wolandroids release a couple back, we now have an entire album for your listening pleasure! Attitude indicator is an evolution in the sound of Weldroid, some fairly glitchy and underground vibes mixed in with some excellent minimalistic beats.

The 15 tracks that make up this release (playing time around 1hr 20mins) are a vast array of different sounds, it sounds a lot like Weldroid was brainstorming the entire release and evolving the tracks, one from the previous. Some fantastic work, well thought out and produced.

Tracks of choice: Not every neuron, Tabby Cat, the oddly named Bonchida dreamin.

Another great release from Weldroid - lets hope we hear more from him again later this year!'

Kahvi #291: Torley / Ambitizers

'If you've been following releases of late, you'll remember Torley from the popular VA recently put out 'Serenity'. Torley was one of the hidden wonders of the release, and I thought it would be nice to get a dedicated ep out featuring his work.

As mentioned in release #290, this release can be played alongside, the tracks in any order, creating an entirely different feeling - think of it as a kind of 'personalised' release. Give it a try and see what I mean.

Ambitizers is a smooth, flowing, indulgent trip through the realms of ambience (with minimal beats here and there).

This eight track release (playtime around 30 minutes) continues the high quality, desirable vibes we heard in Serenity but advances the theme - more depth and atmosphere throughout.

Tracks of choice: Desked (that beat should really last longer), Otoro (is it just me, or does this make you think of 'The Last Ninja' from oldskool gaming days?). '

Kahvi #290: Starcade / Les Introvertis Chroniques

'Yet another guest artist for release #290 (hey, I remember getting to the 100th release and we're nearly at 300?) in the shape of Starcade, one of the few Kahvi artists from Sweden. This release is aimed at the pure end of the 'fun' element in music. A small ep this time around, six tracks with just over 30 minutes of playtime, short but very sweet indeed.

Every track appears as a classic, tuneful beast - be it slower and deep or faster with gentle melodies. Perhaps I could even compare the EP to that of Kahvi master - Xerxes?

Favourite tracks - Sun Om Beach (track 1) which is a great example of how to use progressive buildup to excellent use. Simple to begin but layers building to a crescendo ending. One to hit the permanent playlist for sure. Another favourite - A storm called Destiny. An epic journey into various styles of sound - instrumental electronica with a gentle sea breeze. For some reason this reminds me of a track - perhaps a movie soundtrack?

This release sees something slightly different - I give you a clue to the next release :) After checking out this and the next, it became apparent that they work so well together, the next being heavily ambient with subtle beats, you could play the tracks from this and the next in any order - and create your own 'personal' release. Check out #291 and try it for yourself.'

Kahvi #289: Wolandroid / Bright lights closed eyes

'Slightly more mainstream is the mood of the next release. A new artist in the shape of Wolandroid, who is, in fact, a friend of fellow Kahvi artist Weldroid. Not entirely sure what the similarity of the artist names signifies but they do say that impersonation is the sincerest form of flattery (or something like that).

I guess the closest you could get to Wolandroid in comparison would be U97 (back in the early 90s) in the dance and techno circuits. And yes! Vocals make a comeback @ KahviHQ but once again only in a special case. This can be seen as such a special case, with nice sounds throughout, 'suitable vocals' (unlike many a early 90s track I could mention) which actually give something to the tracks.

A nice release, short but sweet and well worthy of several listens, if not adding to your permanent playlist.

Tracks of mention: Finding rapture, the oddly named 'Night falls down (?)' and I've lost (which sounds amazingly similar to Alpha Conspiracy). Have fun!'

Kahvi #288: Polygon Ring / Songs from the season labs

'A while back listeners of the podcast got a preview of releases to come - of which one track was from a live set by Polygon Ring.

After convincing the man that it was worthy of a seperate release, this 16 track album is the result.

Taking the basic live set as a starting point, the album has evolved into an almost entirely new entity. With a serious Boards of Canada edge appearing on some of the tracks (northwest showers being a true example of Boards style melodica and relatex to name a couple) there are refreshing tracks like 'a most unusual camera' which has one of the most additive arpeggios of late.

Watch out for a remix of a track from our very own Sektor - 'Loki' (not to forget that Sektor has two albums out on itunes via Kahvi commercial which are well worth a download)

Additional credits for this release: Mastering by Christopher Leary at Melograf Mastering, except track 10 mastered by Twerk at Audible Oddities and cover artwork by Alex Varanese.

Kahvi #287: Various Artists / Serenity

Kahvi #286: Aleksi Eeben / A little man entered a big village

'Aleksi Eeben, being a man who doesn't take his music too seriously, decided he would like his new ep released on April Fools day (by popular request, due to a comment on his previous ep). And here we are, a seven track selection by the master himself.

We have some rather strange and odd tracks, such as the first of the ep. In his usual, semi random style, the piece has distinctive 'chip tune' overtones. However, its later on in the ep that the real wow factor begins.

Linen & Linseed is probably one of those tracks that you'll put in your permanent playlist. I've listed to it no end of times and its got that 'addictive' quality. The force is strong in this one. Also, check out Le Prince Enorme which features one of the greatest lead sounds I've heard in a good while.

A fun release for this time of year, to blow away the winter and welcome in the spring.'

Kahvi #285: Jim Black / Yoctosecond

'A new release and a new guest artist. Jim Black arrives on Kahvi shores from the UK and keeping up with the traditional profile of UK artists, his release is slightly different from the norm.

Abstract electronic is how Jim describes his music and I would go further in saying that it ranges from fast beats to the more analogue retro feel. A classic example of analogue meeting modern style is Electro basement, whereas Stark Reality dives into the realms of oldskool techno.

An interesting six track ep to go with the groove of the existing Kahvi releases, easy listening and refreshing in parts. Worth checking out.'
